International Women’s Day and the Elimination of violence Against Women

Problems faced by Women in the North West were addressed during the second preparatory meeting for the 28th Edition of the International Women’s Day. Under the Chairmanship of the Regional Delegate of Women’s Empowerment, Mrs Ngue Abong, they discussed and prayed for a fair quota representation at national elections, the legalization of marriages and female genital mutilation. The meeting took place at the Regional Delegation of Public Health, Thursday and was attended by women from many social groups. Mrs. Mbong revealed her Ministry’s plans for helping women who are interested in politics and income generating activities. They also agreed to massively register to vote at the next elections and engage in philanthropic endeavours. They also called for the education of more women and frowned at the misconstrued manner that the Day is being celebrated. This year’s edition will be celebrated under the theme “Elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women.” An enlarged preparatory meeting under the chair of the Governor has been slated for 15 February 2013 at the Conference Hall of the Divisional Office, Bamenda II. SDF Chieftain advocates voter registration. SDF National Chairman has called on his militants to register to vote in the next elections. Ni John Fru was addressing militants and others in Ndop yesterday during the second lap of his awareness campaigns to woe more SDF followers to take part in the ongoing biometric registration process. Bamenda Universty Land Matter

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Tafah Edocat Edward, has been challenged to respect procedures especially as they concern the acquisition of land for the new State University.

The Bamenda University, located in Bambili in the Tubah Council area, has been under contradictory positions, as regards acquisition of land. Other villages were opting to provide land if the University was not to be located in Bambili.

The Vice Chancellor has been keenly interested in getting structures accomplished in record time and did not bother about administrative procedures. And following derogatory statements made by the Vice Chancellor against Prof. Abety for dabbling negatively in the matter of land acquisition, Abety retorted by pointing out that, as compared with the Vice Chancellor’s qualifications and experience, he is holder of a double PhD, Professor and Board Chair of the General Certificate of Education. Therefore, according to him the VC is in no position to question his stand on such issues.

In an interview over Radio Hot Cocoa, Prof. Peter Abety, as elite of the area, criticized the Vice Chancellor for applying unorthodox procedures in the acquisition of land for the University. He spoke to Radio Hot Cocoa after a close-door meeting chaired by the Senior Divisional Officer of Mezam,  Nguelle Nguelle Felix.

The aim of the meeting was to examine how to effectively implement the Presidential Decree that created the Bamenda University.

Also in attendance at the meeting were traditional and administrative authorities of that municipality and members of the Youth Council.

Buea University students on strike

Students of Buea University started strike action Wednesday calling on the Vice Chancellor (VC) to lift a ban on make-shift documentation offices and phone booths operating on campus.

As the VC was driving in for work the students stopped her car, deflated the tires and held her hostage for five hours, according to eye-witness reports.

Tension was diffused when the Governor of the South West Region, Okalia Bilai, Mayor Mbella Muki Charles and the DO of Buea appeared on the scene

The students are also asking the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mrs Nalova Lyonga, to withdraw her statement that she is not to provide refreshments during the 47th Youth Day festivities on 11 February 2013.

The students are deciding to boycott the march past on that day if the Vice Chancellor does not withdraw the statement before the D-day, the reports said.
